Steve Coogan, the much-loved comedian famous for playing Alan Partridge, has been in St Albans today (Tuesday, June 25) to endorse two Hertfordshire Lib Dem candidates in a bid to use tactical voting to take on the Conservatives.

Mr Coogan met with Harpenden and Berkhamsted candidate Victoria Collins and South West Herts candidate Sally Symington at Redbournbury Mill near the River Ver, where he also expressed his upset at the ongoing scandal of water companies releasing sewage discharges into local rivers and lakes.

Heis a traditional Labour voter, but is urging people in Hertfordshire to tactically vote Lib Dem in these constituencies as leading tactical voting websites have recommended voting Lib Dem for those who wish to see the Conservative Party ousted from power.

Speaking to MyLocalNews about the endorsement, Victoria said: “This is going to be a historic election where so many people are looking for change. So to have the support of someone like Steve Coogan who is saying to vote tactically is really important.”

Sally added: “Steve is passionate about cleaning up our waterways, and both me and Victoria have campaigning with the Liberal Democrats about cleaning up our waterways.”

Speaking exclusively to MyLocalNews about the ongoing sewage discharge problem, Steve said: “It is a scandal. For the past thirty years, the privitised utility companies have been squirrelling away profits and paying out huge dividends to shareholders, while not investing in the infrastructure.

“The reason they’re able to is directly linked to the fact that they’re allowed to dump this sewage. The system is broken.”
