A medical researcher and doctor at Mount Vernon Hospital in Northwood has been given an Honourable Mention by an international science prize.

Dr Beverley De Valois, who is a researcher in integrative medicine at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, was given the prize by the International Society for Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine Research, as part of their annual Scientific Article Prize.

This was for her public research paper titled Acupuncture in the real world: Evaluating a 15-year NADA auricular acupuncture service for breast cancer survivors experiencing hot flushes and night sweats as a consequence of adjuvant hormonal therapies, which was published in 2022.

It focused on the use of acupuncture for breast cancer survivors to manage the hot flushes and night sweats that sometimes come with the hormonal treatments they receive after overcoming the disease.

The organisers stated: “The competition this year was very strong, so congratulations on presenting such excellent research!”

This is the second time that the work conducted by Dr De Valois in this field has been praised, as she received an overwhelmingly positive response when she presented her research at the Society of Integrative Oncology in September last year.

A spokesperson for East & North Hertfordshire Hospitals Charity said of the win: “We are thrilled for Beverley and her team and proud to have supported such fantastic research to help patients who have had breast cancer.”
