IN MEMORY: Watford resident runs half marathon in memory of two late partners

A Watford resident took on the Brighton Half Marathon on March 2 to raise funds for Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care, which cared for two of his partners.

James Power has dealt with something that most people cannot imagine: losing two partners to cancer in the space of seven years.

He was set to marry his girlfriend Natalie in August 2011, but the celebrations were postponed after she was diagnosed with stomach cancer. Natalie passed away in September 2012, aged 33.

James met Nicky in 2015, but just three years later, she was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Nicky passed away in March 2019, aged 47.

Both of James’ partners were admitted to Peace Hospice in Watford for end-of-life care. To thank the charity for their support, James has pledged to run the marathon each year to raise vital funds.

James said: “It has now become an annual tradition to run the Brighton Half Marathon and we all wear t-shirts saying ‘Running for Nicky with a smile’. This is because when we ran together, Nicky would always say to me ‘Smile, James, as running with a smile is always easier!’”
