FOOTIE FAITHFUL: Faiths come together for Stanmore football match

A new interfaith football match kicked off in Stanmore last month, with a seven-a-side match between two local teams.

The two teams, Mosaic Jewish Community and the Stanmore Chapel, played the match at the Hive on Sunday, July 16.

Mosaic opened the scoring, but a cagey first half ended with the Stanmore Chapel 2-1 up. The Chapel’s canny passing and effective press eventually overcame the synagogue’s dogged defence. As legs tired, play became more free flowing – and the match ended with the Chapel deserving 5-3 victors.

The match was arranged in the hope that sport can help strengthen connections between Stanmore’s diverse local faith groups.

Anthony Lazarus, rabbi at Mosaic Masorti, said: “I really believe in sport and I think it helps people get to know each other and have a nice time together.

“People that might not have spent time together otherwise, often find it quite a good introduction.

“It is a good jumping point for discussion; we didn’t win the match but other than that it was successful.”
