‘WORSE OFF’: Abbots Langley resident raises concerns over council tax impact on disabled people

Published on: 11th January 2026   |   By: News Desk   |   Category: Uncategorized

Last month, a resident contacted ABBOTSnews to express concern that disabled people transitioning from older benefits to Universal Credit could be losing essential financial support due to the way the council is managing the system.

They claim that the Three Rivers District Council (TRDC) are allegedly counting a transitional protection payment, which is meant to temporarily stop people from being worse off, as regular income.

This error can reduce or remove council tax support for disabled residents, leaving some suddenly paying more than before.

Remaining anonymous, the resident shared with ABBOTSnews: “TRDC are taking this as income, which is making many disabled people so much worse off.”

In a response, a spokesperson for TRDC said: “This scheme was approved by Full Council and included a full Equality Impact Assessment.

“Our scheme disregards Carers Allowance in full, and there is a further £60 disability disregard for those in receipt of Disability Living Allowance, PIP or Attendance Allowance.

“There is certainly no intention to discriminate against people with disabilities.”
