WHAT A STINK! Chalfont St Giles withdrawn from competition due to sewage issues

Chalfont St Giles has officially withdrawn from the Buckinghamshire Best Kept Village competition, which it has previously won six times.

Chalfont St Giles Parish Council (CSGPC) announced on Thursday, June 27, that it had taken the “very difficult and sad decision” to withdraw from the competition.

The council explained that the areas which “usually attract high marks in the competition” have been closed off due to sewage contamination. Following flooding and pollution in the meadows and the River Misbourne, Riverside Walk and the play area have been closed off to the public. The high levels of groundwater have unseated the new pond liner in the village pond, which is also closed to the public.

A statement from CSGPC reads: “We know that this will be hugely disappointing to many residents, especially those who have given their time and effort to improve the village for the competition. The councillors and grounds staff are also disappointed.

“We are hopeful that the conditions around the village centre will have dissipated by 2025 when we will come back to challenge the 2024 winners for the cup.”

CSGPC declined to comment.
