MARVELLOUS MAISIE: Croxley schoolgirl raises awareness of condition following diagnosis

Published on: 11th July 2024   |   By: Sophia Sheera   |   Category: Uncategorized

A nine-year-old girl from Croxley has turned an unexpected medical diagnosis into an opportunity to prove that nothing can stop her.

This January, Maisie Avis was diagnosed with severe scoliosis, curvature of the spine. Since then, the Little Green Junior School pupil has worn a brace for 20 to 23 hours every day and may have to undergo back surgery when she stops growing.

Yet with remarkable bravery, Maisie has taken the diagnosis in her stride.

Asked how she felt when she received her diagnosis, the keen dancer said: “I was nervous but also excited to learn about the condition. I’ve set up an Instagram account where I post about having scoliosis so other people can see what it’s like, and I’ve done an assembly at school, too.”

Laura, Maisie’s mum, added: “Scoliosis hasn’t stopped Maisie from doing anything. Once I turned around and saw her doing flips over a pole whilst wearing the brace, and she smiled at me as if to say ‘this condition hasn’t stopped me’.”
