‘TRAUMATIC’: Business says Bushey community is ‘shocked to the core’ by crossbow killings

A family-run garage in Bushey has described the shock and horror of the events of yesterday (Wednesday, July 10).

Carol Hunt, 61, and daughters Louise, 25 and Hannah, 28, died at their home in Bushey on Tuesday, July 9. A police manhunt for Kyle Clifford, 26, caused widespread concern in the community before his eventual arrest yesterday evening in Enfield.

Bushey Hall Garage is a family-run business which has operated in the town for 75 years.

The garage still had staff on site working when air ambulances landed on fields nearby on Tuesday evening. As they headed home, they saw police vehicles parked up outside the property in Ashlyn Close, where the three women were killed in a crossbow attack.

On Wednesday, there was a police presence on Bushey Hall Drive near Longwood Nursery, Bushey Hall Mobile Home Park and the new housing estate.

Speaking to Bushey News, Dawn Ayres from the garage says residents are still trying to “come to terms” with what has happened right on their doorstep in a “quiet residential” road.

She said: “We are shocked to the core with what has happened. This has rocked the community. It is not what you expect in Bushey. We call for an immediate review on regulations relating to crossbow availability and use. Our thoughts go out to John, daughter Amy and family.

“In 75 years of operation, we have never experienced anything as traumatic as this in Bushey. Ashlyn Close is just two minutes from our site. We were also concerned for our staff while the hunt for Clifford went on along with those living in the mobile home park behind our site and the new housing development next door.  There are two schools within minutes of Ashlyn Close, along with a playgroup operating out of a church in Bushey Hall Road and a starter school in Greatham Road.

“It was a relief to hear Clifford was captured in Enfield yesterday. A tremendous police and emergency services effort.”

Clifford is currently receiving medical treatment having been found with injuries. It is believed he was known to the victims.
