‘WE’RE STRUGGLING’: Beloved St Albans dessert shop shares financial struggles and fears

Published on: 12th April 2024   |   By: Panayiota Demosthenous   |   Category: Uncategorized

A well-loved St Albans dessert shop has shared its fears and the changes it is having to make, following financial struggles.

The Pudding Stop first popped up in 2011, in their “pudmobile” outside of St Albans Station. Nearly 14 years later, the shop has grown exponentially, opening shops in Radlett, Harpenden and Redbourn, branching into bakery and pizzas.

In a post shared by owner Johnny Sheperd on their social media in March, he said: “Eek…we’re struggling a bit. Ever since covid really, like others in hospitality. It’s all taken its toll. We love a massive rise on our bakes. But not on our costs.”

The shop shared their concerns, noting a rise in interest rates, energy bills and inflation, which means the shop will see less staff in the shop and fewer items on the menu.

They continued: “Everything we do from next week will be focused on our best sellers, the products that bring in the big bucks. So that everyone in St Albans and Harpenden, Radlett and Redbourn doesn’t have a MASSIVE downer because The Pudding Stop no longer exists.

“So please keep supporting us and our lovely team. The bakers, the shop teams, the delivery drivers. Everyone has a story, everyone has been with us for years, and for some, it’s the only job they’ve ever known. It’s not their fault, it’s not anyone’s fault really. It’s just life.”

The post was met with over 2,000 likes and hundreds of comments sharing support for the shop.

One customer said: “Quite simply the best puds you’ll ever eat anywhere. We’re with you Johnny.”

Another said: “We love all you do, the friendly staff, excellent quality, innovative product range and of course, the wonderful team spirit you have created in the business. Hopefully, all this should see you through this tough time!”
