Pony and trap racing has been a chronic problem along the A413 Amersham Road in Chalfont St Peter for almost two decades and is a regular source of complaint amongst residents, but why isn’t more being done?
On social media, one resident argued that it was the police’s inconsistency which has allowed the problem to continue. Several suggested the police had “better things to deal with”.
Another resident claimed that the RSPCA doesn’t step in “due to fear”.
A Thames Valley Police spokesperson said: “We understand pony and trap racing on the A413 is a concern for the local community and we are working with our partners to tackle the issue.
“While it is not a crime, we will respond to such reports when there is a significant risk to public safety.”
Equine specialist Dr Mark Kennedy from the RSPCA said: “In any activity involving horses and ponies, their safety and welfare should be the top priority. Racing horses and traps on a public road being used by other traffic rather than a dedicated track can expose them and other road users to risk of collision and severe injury.
“If anyone observes horses being raced in a dangerous manner, they should contact the police immediately. Anyone with concerns for the welfare of any equine should report this to the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.”
