URGENT HELP: Salvation Army appeals for Christmas presents for Watford families

Published on: 25th November 2024   |   By: Nik Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

The Salvation Army is calling on the Watford community to donate to its Christmas Present Appeal after requests for support from struggling families doubled this year.

Last year, Watford Salvation Army helped 194 children who would otherwise have gone without a gift on Christmas Day. The church and charity has been asked to support 380 children so far in 2024.

Captain Mark Scoulding leads The Salvation Army in the town and said donations have been coming in at a slower pace, leaving hundreds of children at risk of having nothing to open on Christmas Day.

He said: “The community’s generosity last year made a world of difference but this year we know that many people who donated a gift last year will instead need our help this Christmas. The need is unprecedented but, so far, donations are falling short. We’re urgently appealing to everyone – individuals, businesses and organisations – to help us meet this incredible demand. Christmas is a time for joy and giving, and no child should feel forgotten.

“With the support of our community, we can ensure that everyone of these 380 children wakes up to something special on Christmas morning. Donations are needed right away – we distribute gifts as early as we can so that families don’t worry about Christmas and get themselves into debt.”

The church will also be collecting donations of new, unwrapped toys until Saturday, December 14. Collecting trollies are now open 24/7 in Asda Watford.
