UNBELIEVABLE HORNETS: Watford thrash unbeaten Liverpool for huge victory

Published on: 29th February 2020   |   By: Geraint Roberts   |   Category: Watford FC

Watford beat Liverpool 3-0 after Ismaila Sarr (2) and Troy Deeney’s second half goals finally put Liverpool’s winning run to an end.

The Hornets were winless in five games, but a tremendous display from Sarr means they are now out of the Premier League’s relegation area.

Gerard Deulofeu went close four minutes into the game, but his effort went just wide of the mark.

The Hornets were forced to swap Deulofeu for Roberto Pereyra 36 minutes into the game after an injury.

Deeney almost put Watford ahead moments before half time after Will Hughes brilliantly knocked down the ball for the striker to shoot, but it trickled just wide of Alisson’s goal.

Sarr returned to the starting line up this afternoon after a brief spell out due to injury, and the Senegalese winger sent Vicarage Road wild when Abdoulaye Doucoure squared the ball for him to poke home.

Moments later, on the hour mark, Sarr was through again thanks to Deeney’s through ball, and he wonderfully chipped Alisson to stun Liverpool and go two goals in front.

Adam Lallana went the closest for the visitors as he hit the post on the 65th minute.

Sarr turned from goalscorer, to provider on the 76th minute when he found Deeney on the edge of the area and he found the net perfectly with a brilliant finish.

January signing Ignacio Pussetto was brought on for Sarr, who received a standing ovation from The Hornets’ supporters.

Watford held on to do the unthinkable and end Liverpool’s unbeaten run, making them the only team this season to grab all three points from The Reds.

It’s a massive three points for The Hornets, whose form under Nigel Pearson had appeared to stall.

It’s Crystal Palace up next for Watford next Saturday, as their fight for Premier League survival continues.
