Dacorum Triathlon Club’s (DTC) annual Hemel Sprint Triathlon has been hailed as a huge success.
On Sunday, September 15, 59 participants took part in a 400m pool swim, 17km bike ride and 5km run through the town. Under the glorious autumn sunshine, participants of different ages and abilities completed the event.
The event is put together annually by DTC, supported by Everyone Active. The leisure centre operator provides lifeguards, first aid and the venues for free to keep the event low cost and to allow as many people as possible to take part.
Jo Watkinson, DTC’s head coach and race director, said: “It’s fantastic! It takes a lot of work to make happen and we put in a lot of time and effort to make it the best event we can.
“I do a lot of running around like a headless chicken before the day, but once we get going, I get to stand there at the finish line and enjoy the endorphins coming off the people finishing, and it’s infectious.”
Both beginners and seasoned athletes took part in the triathlon. One participant, Georgi Mann, set a new course record of 1.05.49 – an improvement from the record of 1.06.10 she set last year.
Jo continued: “Helping people achieve something, especially if it’s their first time and they often doubt themselves, to be there to help them celebrate and give them a medal is truly inspiring, and why we keep doing it year after year.”
DTC are always looking for more athletes to join, and the club boasts a nearly 50/50 split between male and female participants. Club members can take part in triathlons, duathlons, aquathlons, running, cycling and swimming events at all levels.
