A woman has celebrated her birthday by taking on an epic swimming challenge for a Stanmore-based charity.

Eleanor Reddington, who recently turned 70, completed 70 one-mile swims in locations across the world to raise money for spinal cord injury charity Aspire.

Swimming in the Irish Sea, locations in the USA and various pools across the UK, Eleanor chose to complete her final swim on her birthday on July 6 at the Aspire Leisure Centre in Stanmore.

Eleanor has raised £3,200 for the charity, adding to the more than £15,000 she has raised participating in the Aspire Channel swim since its inception in 2003.

Eleanor said: “Turning 70 is a milestone that I wanted to mark in a meaningful way. Swimming that last mile at the Aspire Leisure Centre seemed the perfect way to celebrate.”

Paul Parrish, director of fundraising and marketing for Aspire, said: “We are a very lucky charity to have someone as committed as Eleanor supporting us. We spend the money that Eleanor raises carefully and this will directly support Aspire’s programmes.”

At the time of writing Eleanor had raised £3,207. To donate, visit her JustGiving page.
