To say you have performed in a smash hit movie with the likes of Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, is something former Watford resident Tegan still can’t believe is true.
Starring in Wicked is just the latest success for Tegan Browne-Winter, having also performed with singer Lizzo at the BRIT Awards 2023 and appeared in an advert for Google.
Tegan, who was raised in Watford, attended St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School and Watford Grammar School for Girls.
Dance has long been her passion, and her mum often recalls the story of Tegan dancing to Beyoncé in front of the television at age three.
Speaking with Watford News, Tegan said: “My mum wanted me to study subjects like science but I knew I wanted to dance. It took many years of persuading, but she’s my biggest fan now!”
Tegan was chosen to star in Wicked after she was scouted performing at the Red Bull Dance Your Style competition.
Talking about her time on set, Tegan said: “I had a great time. It was my first movie, so I was just so excited about everything we were doing. Everyone was so nice!
“After the first week, Ariana kept popping her head in on our rehearsals and I had to turn around and try not to freak out!”
Tegan commended the inclusivity and diversity of the project, saying she was “excited and relieved” not to be the only plus-sized dancer involved. She also reflected on the choreography, particularly the time taken to workshop and choreograph dances for performers in wheelchairs.
She said: “To this day, I still think how did this happen? How is this my life? I’ve had these dreams since I was little. But I kept thinking, am I even meant to be in this space with all these legends?
“Even though my own doubts creep in, I keep thinking ‘Wow Tegan you did such a good job!’”
Tegan now teaches dance to younger students and hopes her story will inspire them to follow their dreams.
She added: “The main thing I push for and instil into my kids is no matter what you look like, or who you are, you can achieve the goals you want to. Your size doesn’t define who you are!”
