Field of Dreams Fitness (FOD), a group for people in Radlett who want to keep in shape, is celebrating its first anniversary.
RADLETTnews spoke to one of the group’s founders, Neil Curtis, about their journey.
Despite the club’s young age, many of its members have actually known each other for far longer.
Up until the start of last year, another fitness club operated a group in Radlett. However, the club decided the Radlett location wasn’t economically viable, so consolidated its Watford operation.
Neil said: “There were maybe 30 people in the Radlett location. We individually went away and looked around the fitness market in our various locations, but nothing really appealed to us. So, we decided to try running it ourselves, since some of us are good friends and enjoy what we do together.”
Held at Tabards Rugby Football Club in Radlett, FOD is not-for-profit. The sessions are led by a fully qualified fitness coach who adapts the exercises for attendees’ abilities. Members range from 35 to 70 years of age.
He said: “We’ve gone from 29 initial members to 40 purely through word of mouth. Because we’re not for profit, we’ve been able to set a low membership fee compared to other organisations.
“It’s purely for the benefit of everyone else. It’s a social thing; a mental workout as well as a physical workout.”
The club operates from 6am to 7am every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and from 7am to 8am on Saturdays. Neil hopes the club will expand its size further, allowing them to reduce the membership costs for each attendee.
He added: “We are very supportive of each other, and we welcome all sorts of abilities.”
