Taekwondo instructor Chanelle Kelly was lucky enough to see 19 of her students collect silverware at a recent national competition.
On Saturday, February 8, students from TOTAL TKD Chorleywood Taekwondo School attended the ITF England Championships at The Dolphin Leisure Centre, Haywards Heath, along with 500 competitors from across England.
Most of Chanelle’s students are in primary school, with her youngest competitor being just eight.
Speaking to CHORLEYWOODnews, Chanelle said: “When I’m watching my students, I get so nervous! I care so much, and I want them to do well; most of the time, I’m more nervous than they are!
“I know how hard they work and how much they deserve it.”
Nineteen of the club’s fighters took home medals at the competition. This included Denis Muresan and Vivian Tsvetkova, who won their categories and are now national champions.
Chanelle was nominated for a mylocalHero award in November 2024 for all the work she has done with the group, and particularly for helping to encourage more young girls to take up taekwondo.
Chanelle added: “I’m so proud of them! Not many girls do martial arts, and being a female instructor, it really pushes them.
“The parents often tell me that their kids look up to me, which is really cute. That’s part of why I do it. I’m so pleased the girls have kept going and want to take part. It makes me so proud and happy, it’s hard to put into words!”
Chanelle explained that the group has several major competitions coming up, and added that she hopes her students will secure even more medals and titles.
