Community heroes were recognised at Abbots Langley Parish Council’s (ALPC) Civic Awards on Saturday, April 12.
Guests at the event, held at the Manor House Sports and Social Centre, included representatives from local businesses and community groups, alongside parish and district councillors and guest speaker Annie Brewster JP.
The awards have been hosted by ALPC since 2007 and this year were sponsored by Warner Bros. Studios.
This year’s awards honoured local historian Roger Yapp with the Outstanding Achievement Award. Roger, who has specialist knowledge of Abbots Langley’s rich history, leads the Abbots Langley Local History Society.
Most recently, Roger played a pivotal role in collaborating with ALPC on the V80 events across the parish from May through to Remembrance Sunday in November, which will commemorate 80 years since the end of the Second World War.
Brenda Southorn was awarded the Service to the Local Community Award in recognition of her outstanding dedication to village life, particularly her contributions to St Lawrence Church over the past 40 years.
The Local Community Group Award was presented to A Heart For Abbots Langley, also known as the Thursday Coffee Club. This group brings the community together every Thursday morning from 10am to 12pm at the Methodist Church Hall. Run entirely by volunteers, the club offers tea, coffee, and homemade cakes, along with support for those who may be living alone.
Chairman of ALPC councillor Jane Lay, who presented the awards, said: “All three winners are truly deserving. We’re so lucky to have such fantastic people living in our village who help make our community so special.”
