An Abbots Langley resident’s first collection of children’s poetry is being published next month.
Sarah Ziman’s poetry has featured in several magazines and anthologies and won the YorkMix Children’s Poems for Children competition in 2021.
On Friday, September 6, Troika Books is publishing Sarah’s debut collection of poetry, Why Did My Brain Make Me Say It?, which is designed for children aged seven-plus. The collection is loosely arranged across a school year – September through to Halloween, Christmas, spring, summer holidays, and the start of a new school year.
The collection has already received glowing reviews from highly respected children’s poets Brian Bilston, Brian Moses and Coral Rumble, and was at the top of Amazon’s Hot New Releases for children’s poetry on the day of its release.
Sarah, who has lived in Abbots Langley for 11 years, says that she first realised poetry could be fun when, aged eight, she was given a copy of the much-loved Allan Ahlberg collection, Please Mrs Butler.
She said: “I didn’t know then that I’d ever have my own collection of poems written for children of a similar age. My boys would come home and tell me about their school day, plus I was on the parent teacher association and a school governor, so I had quite a lot of inspiration.
“I started sharing poems on X and they went down well, and so I started submitting them to children’s magazines and anthologies, where they began to be published. I far prefer writing for kids – you can be far more playful.”
Why Did My Brain Make Me Say It? is available for preorder on Amazon, from bookshops and directly from Sarah’s website at www.sarahziman.co.uk if you would like a signed copy. Sarah is also available for school visits and teachers are welcome to get in touch via her website.
