A Stanmore mum has written and published an illustrated children’s book which features a pelican as its main character.
Pelican Boots by Laura Stanton is written in rhyming verse and tells the story of a pelican who goes to see an art exhibition in London. However, he encounters various problems along the way and attracts the attention of onlookers eager to get their photo taken with him.
Laura said that it was in St James’s Park in London that she was inspired to write the book.
She said: “I love art, and I loved writing about the paintings and the gallery. I also really like the character, and am honestly quite into pelicans; they’re very amusing. This one is so bored with his lake; he’s a cultured bird!”
Laura added that writing came naturally to her.
She said: “I always enjoyed writing children’s books. I always loved writing, and I used to write a lot of poetry. When I had my children, I wrote stories for them at bedtime and would make up cute little stories that just started to pour out of me.
“I just really enjoyed it; there’s something about writing stories that lets your inner child out. It’s quite fun and spontaneous for me.”
