A petition opposing housing development on Joel Street Farm is said to have reached 850 signatures as residents urge Hillingdon Council to protect the green belt.
The petition opened on Tuesday, August 18, and asks the council not to release the land at Joel Street Farm Lands, between Northwood Hills and Eastcote, for development through the Hillingdon Local Plan.
It has already passed the council’s 50-signature threshold for formal consideration and was reported to have 621 signatures after two days.
Andrew Riley, chair of Northwood Hills Residents Association, said the petition had reached 850 signatures as of this morning (Aug 21).
The petition says the land should remain protected because green belt development cannot be reversed and highlights the site’s wildlife, mature oak trees and hedgerows.
The campaign comes as the council’s Local Plan scoping consultation closes at 5pm on Friday, August 21, with site-specific proposals not due to appear until a later consultation beginning in November.
Hillingdon Council has said its Local Plan remains its responsibility, although it must be in general conformity with the London Plan.
The council has also said the Mayor’s draft London Plan proposes 24,030 homes in Hillingdon over ten years, with 61 per cent on green belt land.
The Joel Street Farm petition remains open until Friday, September 18, while residents will be able to respond to the site-specific stage of the Local Plan process from November 5.
