ELECTION 2023: Tories lose control of Hertsmere council for first time since 1999

Published on: 5th May 2023   |   By: Nik Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

For the first time since 1999, no party will have complete control of Hertsmere Borough Council (HBC), following the results of the 2023 local elections.

With votes counted overnight, the Conservatives, who have been in control of the council for 24 years, lost 13 of their 29 seats.

Meanwhile, Labour have gained seven new seats, bringing their total to 14, and the Liberal Democrats gained six, tripling their total to nine.

This leaves the council with no party majority, meaning that a coalition between parties will have to be formed in the coming days.

Election results from across the country are still trickling in, but so far they paint a grim picture for the Conservatives, who have also lost control of councils in Medway, Plymouth, and Windsor & Maidenhead amongst others.

Results are still being counted in Watford, St Albans, Three Rivers and Dacorum.

Hertsmere Conservatives, Labour and Liberal Democrats have been contacted for comment.
