LEVEL UP: Northwood teenager nominated for national video game prize

A Northwood teenager has been shortlisted for a national prize after designing a concept for her own video game.

Isabella Zhang, 14, is one of the finalists in the 2024 BAFTA Young Game Designers Competition in the category of Game Concept (ages 10 to 14).

In Kitty Crash, gamers control a set of mischievous young cats on a quest to destroy their owners’ possessions. You must scratch, knock over and bite objects without being caught to earn points to level up each cat’s skills and damage.

With multiple unique levels and a system where you can exchange collected coins for customisable items and new cats, the game is aimed at children and cat enthusiasts alike.

Speaking about her nomination, Isabella said: “As a finalist, I am looking forward to sharing my game concept with other finalists and seeing what innovative and fun ideas they have also come up with.”

Isabella is competing against nine other young people who have designed their own video games. The winners of the competition will be announced by award-winning comedian Inel Tomlinson on a livestream on the organisation’s YouTube channel on Thursday, June 27.

The winners’ games will also feature in the Power Up exhibition, set to tour locations across the UK, including the Science Museum in London.

The entries have been selected by representatives from some of the UK’s top gaming companies, including TT Games and Rocksteady Studios.
