Radlett is in mourning after the death of a much-loved member of the local community.
John Apthorp CBE sadly passed away at the age of 89 on Tuesday, July 9.
Tributes have poured in from people who remember him as a man who gave generously to the village through charity.
He was best known nationally as the founder of frozen food supermarket chain Bejam, once a mainstay of UK high streets. He also founded Majestic Wines, one of the country’s leading alcohol retailers with more than 200 shops nationwide.
John was also a patron of The Radlett Centre. Thanks to his donations, the theatre was able to install new seating and updated lighting and technical equipment.
He was a staunch supporter of Aldenham Parish Council (APC), providing donations to enable them to put on free public celebrations for events such as His Majesty the King’s coronation.
John received the Freedom of the Parish Award from the council in 2017 and a CBE in 2014, which superseded his OBE awarded in 1998.
Following his death, a spokesperson for APC said: “We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of John Apthorp this week and would like to send heartfelt condolences to his family at this sad time.
“The loss of such a man is immense but he will be remembered for his kindness, integrity, and tireless efforts to make a difference.”
