‘IMPROVE LIVES’: Watford MP backs new bill to protect workers’ employment rights

Published on: 27th November 2024   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category: Uncategorized

Matt Turmaine, MP for Watford, joined nearly 400 MPs in Parliament last month to back the government’s Employments Rights Bill.

The bill will ban exploitative zero-hours contracts and end the unfair practice of ‘fire and rehire’, whereby companies sack people only to re-employ them on worse terms and conditions.

The bill also introduces basic employment rights, such as parental leave, and the right to bereavement leave from day one.

Mr Turmaine MP, who backed the bill in Parliament on Monday, October 21, said: “Everyone in Watford and across Britain deserves basic rights and protections at work – whether that’s freedom from the risk of fire and rehire, or day-one rights like paternity leave and protection from unfair dismissal. These are real improvements that are going to improve lives.

“That is the change Labour promised and is delivering – modern rights at work designed to give everyone necessary protections and create a workforce ready to deliver the economic growth we so badly need after 14 years of stagnation under the Conservatives.”
