Volunteers from Sustainable Three Rivers (S3R) CIC and Woodoaks Farm braved blistering conditions last month, as the work began to create Rickmansworth’s very first Community Garden.
Three large raised beds have been built, using 112 railway sleepers, and planting of herbs, vegetables and companion flowers has begun. With climate change in mind, the garden has been designed to ensure water usage is as sustainable as possible. S3R hopes to share information on growing resilient plants and caring for wildlife, as the effects of climate change increase.
The project is being sponsored by Three Rivers District Council, Batchworth Community Council and The Chiltern Society, as part of the River Chess Smarter Water Catchment Initiative, in association with Thames Water.
S3R Chair Rosi Jordon said: “Helping people to understand how to grow their own food is really important. We want our community garden to be open to everyone, including people living in flats without gardens and youngsters who want to learn how to grow vegetables, like tomatoes and pumpkins.
“We want the garden to be a community space, where anyone who is feeling lonely or is struggling with their mental health can come down and meet people and feel less isolated.”
The community garden can be found behind the Rose Garden, situated opposite the Three Rivers District Council building in central Rickmansworth.
S3R will hold a launch event soon, with date to be confirmed. The group welcomes new volunteers. For more information, visit their website www.sustainablethreerivers.org
