A dog has been hailed a “hero” after alerting its owner to a potential intruder at their home in Watford.

Zeus the rescue dog woke owner Niki Sinfield in the early hour of her birthday on December 19 when he began barking at her window.

Niki initially was unaware of what was happening calling Zeus back to bed, however when the barking continued she knew something was wrong.

Speaking to WatfordNews about the incident, Niki said after checking her CCTV she saw three intruders in her garden.

She said: “I was rudely awoken on my birthday. Me and Zeus were fast asleep when he jumped at the window and barked.

“I knew my neighbours were having some drinks so I thought nothing of it but Zeus went back to the window so I thought I would check my CCTV and saw the gate was open.

“I took him out with me to lock the gate and he ran out and he doesn’t normally do that. After reviewing all the CCTV I came across someone in my garden.”

Niki said that she rewarded Zeus for his efforts with steaks on her birthday alongside a small bit of birthday cake.

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Police said: “Police were called at just before 5am on Monday, December 19 to report a suspicious incident in Foxhill, Watford.

“It was reported that an unknown person was spotted on CCTV in a residential garden at 3.30am.

“The person left the area when a security light came on and dog barked.”
