St Martin’s Church in Shenley has been given a £1,500 Community Infrastructure Levy grant for its community café scheme.
The grant will come from Shenley Parish Council (SPC) and will pay for heating for the church for over a year.
SPC councillor Natalie Susman said: “I feel that the church is a really good warm space for people to go to, we should try to support them.”
Cllr Susman also said the café helps to decrease loneliness in the community.
It costs £143 a day to keep the church open for a day, and the donation will support the café which is open from 9.30am to 11am every Friday apart from on soup lunch week, the final week of the month.
Councillor Morris Bright MBE for Potters Bar West and Shenley said he was also willing to contribute £500 to the church.
He said: “It’s all well and good for us to complain about the Winter Fuel Allowance situation, but we need to do something about it.”
The community café began on Friday, September 13, and has so far attracted around 15 people a session, but interest is constantly increasing.
Reverend Sarah Marshall told Radlett News: “It’s really heart-warming to realise that we have such supportive council members who are willing to support local places wanting to do this sort of thing.
“With heating bills the way they are, we were concerned, but to have the chance to run the café and make it inviting is thrilling.”
