‘HEALTH ISSUE’: Abbots Langley fly-tipping sparks anger against National Highways

Published on: 21st April 2025   |   By: Nik Allen   |   Category: Uncategorized

A resident and the Leader of Three Rivers District Council (TRDC) have accused National Highways of “failure to clear fly tipping on its land and to enforce the regulation of an emergency layby”.

The land, owned by National Highways, can be found alongside the Hunton Bridge roundabout layby.

Andy Camp, who lives on Hempstead Road at Hunton Bridge, has regularly complained about noise and fly-tipping arising from lorry drivers parking in the layby. He sought the assistance of councillor Stephen Giles-Medhurst, leader of TRDC.

Mr Camp said: “In the dead of night, I’ve had to confront drivers in noisy vehicles, only to face abuse. This isn’t a lorry park. The rubbish is now rolling down the embankment into our garden. We need a full-scale clearance to prevent vermin — it’s now a public health issue.”

Cllr Giles-Medhurst added: “It’s disgusting, the photos don’t do justice to the extent of the waste – including human waste – left behind. With the warmer weather, this has become a serious health hazard. It cannot be ignored any longer.”

A meeting between Hertfordshire County Council, National Highways, and Three Rivers officers was scheduled. National Highways were reportedly a “no show”.

National Highways have been contacted for comment.
