HAPPY CAMPERS: Hundreds of campers celebrate activity centre’s 60th anniversary

Girls from 15th Watford Guides were among 600 young people who joined a celebration to mark 60 years since the Lees Wood Scout and Guide Activity Centre in Chandlers Cross first opened.

From June 14 to 16, the youngsters camped out at the centre and had the choice of 60 different activities, including pedal karts, bungee runs, a giant assault course, and crafts. They also enjoyed a campfire, toasting s’mores, and a VIP reception with special guests the Mayor and Mayoress of Hertsmere and the Deputy Mayor of Watford.

Ali Hampton, chair of the Lees Wood Fundraising Committee, said: “We were delighted that Dr Ian Doolittle, the Scout who cut the ribbon on the original opening of the campsite on June 14, 1964, was also able to join us.

“We are targeting £250,000 to rebuild the Camp Centre – the administration and volunteer building which is essential to the continued running of Lees Wood. We organised a raffle which was drawn by David Messenger of Watford FC, who kindly donated our main prize.

“More fundraising events are planned – watch this space!”
