Hillingdon Council launched a new campaign on Monday, October 14, aiming to get Northwood and Ruislip residents to reduce contamination in their recycling.
Contamination rates currently match the average London rate of 15 per cent, but the council is setting out to improve this number.
Called Top of the Contaminants, the new campaign is inspired by Top of the Pops-style music countdowns and was launched to coincide with Recycle Week – a national awareness campaign to encourage people to minimise household waste.
In a video, Hillingdon Council shared that the top five contaminating items found in weekly corrections are crisp packets, polystyrene, nappies and sanitary products, textiles, and food.
Councillor Eddie Lavery, Hillingdon Council’s cabinet member for residents’ services, said: “Recycling correctly is better for the planet as it means less waste is being produced. This small change in behaviour also helps save money and allows us all to play a part in creating a greener future.”
