An Amersham roads policing unit completed an operation across South Buckinghamshire, revealing stark and worrying trends with regards to the safety of local roads.
The Thames Valley Police operation, entitled Op Torrent, targeted what is colloquially known as the “Fatal Four”. These four offences; not wearing a seatbelt, using a mobile phone whilst driving, drink/drug driving, and excess speeds, are the most common factors prevalent in collisions where serious harm is caused.
On May 2, the day of the operation, a startling number of offences were recorded.
Throughout the day, 22 people were recorded not wearing their seatbelts, whilst another 11 were seen driving whilst using their mobile phones.
Other offences included one car being found with expired tax and another with no MOT. Two were found to have no insurance, two had tyre defects, and two were driving without a licence.
The most severe cases saw one arrest made for drug driving, and one stolen vehicle recovered.
