A Kings Langley auction held last month featured rare Chitty Chitty Bang Bang memorabilia.

Excalibur Auctions sold a collection of memorabilia from the 1968 movie musical, which starred Dick Van Dyke as eccentric inventor Caractacus Pott.

The sale, which took place on Saturday, August 13, featured some of the magical contraptions created for the film by inventor/designer Rowland Emett.

A replica of Grandpa Potts’ levitating home, a child’s pedal car based on the renowned flying vehicle, and drawings by the late artist Rowland Emett, who created all of Caractacus Pott’s inventions, were among the objects up for sale.

The child’s pedal vehicle, circa early 1970s, is constructed of plastic with a gold finish, a metal grille and bumper, and extendable wings. The car was sold for £1,625.

An original ink and coloured pencil artwork titled The Potts ‘Cruft-de-Luxe’ Dog Tidy by Rowland Emett with annotations explaining what each part of the invention works and a sequence explaining what it does – complete with letter of provenance – sold for £3,500. This was concept artwork commissioned by Warfield Productions and formed the basis for the fairground scene with hair cutting machine.

An unpublished print taken from the original sketch artwork for the film, of Grandpa’s retreat in 1968, was also by Rowland Emett and sold for £175.

Commenting on the result of the sale, a spokesperson for the auction said: “We were delighted to have been able to offer such a special private collection of items that came from a direct source of the iconic film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The owner of the collection amassed it over many years, purely out of a passion for the film. Today saw the top lots in high demand, which is proof of the film’s enduring popularity.”
