CONVICT CLAIM: Man gets £17k for injuries sustained in attempted murder of wife in Garston

A man who stabbed his wife in an attempt to kill her has received more than £17,000 in compensation for injuries he received during the incident.

Dorinel Cojanu attacked his now ex-wife Daniela while drunk and their three children were in the house with an eight-inch knife.

He stabbed twice with the blade into the front her chest and then again into her back, the first two hits penetrating her abdomen. It also left him with a laceration on his ring and little fingers.

Daniela luckily survived, and despite Cojanu claiming that her injuries were self-inflicted and that she had attacked him in his trial, he was found guilty by a jury of the crime.

Meanwhile, Cojanu was admitted to HMP Bedford, with an operation on his fingers scheduled for the next week. However, it was cancelled, with following attempts at getting surgery locally delayed as well. This left the surgery unfeasible after the ten-day window had passed, his tendons unable to be repaired.

For the crime, Cojanu received an 11-year prison sentence and was later deported to his home country of Romania in 2020, but later asserted a personal injury claim against the NHS for the “clinical negligence” he received whilst in jail.

In May 2021, Cojanu was awarded £9,500 at Norwich Crown Court having attempted to gain £350,000 in compensation.

However, this February Mr Justice Ritchie accepted the appeal by his lawyers and raised the awarded figure to £17,750, stating:

“It matters not whether he had suffered the injury opening a tin of beans, in gang warfare or whilst attempting to murder his wife.”
