COMMUNITY CHAMPION: Bushey resident honoured for inspiring dedication to community

Published on: 12th April 2022   |   By: Holly Bullen   |   Category: Uncategorized

A Bushey resident has been honoured for her integral role in putting others in the community first during lockdown and beyond.

Rachel Dimond received a prestigious Community Champion award from Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland as part of their Champions Awards.

Throughout the pandemic Rachel has worked to alleviate food poverty and support some of the most disadvantaged families in Harrow.

Rachel has worked tirelessly with her charity My Yard to distribute over 50 tonnes of surplus food to those in need as well as setting up a summer camp for children to keep them busy, supervised and away from possible criminal activity.

This was not the end of efforts, however, as Rachel took it upon herself to help families at Grange Farm Estate, an estate where transient and refuge families have been housed, by teaching them self-help skills.

Rachel said: “I feel privileged to win this award but it’s only possible due to so many others helping me and giving their time and energy to others. I really am not sure what to say… I just hope anything I have done has been useful in combating isolation and inequalities within our community and I would like to continue to work alongside many strategic partners to make a long term difference.”

Nicki Scott, leader of Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland, praised Rachel for her inspiring efforts.

She said: “What Rachel has managed to achieve with the residents of Grange Farm Estate and with My Yard is truly inspiring.

“Through her belief and dedication, she has brightened the futures of so many people while also bringing a sense of pride and security to her local community during a very challenging time.

Rachel will receive her award at the Gala Awards Ceremony as part of Volunteer Expo Live on May 6 and 7.
