The charity Get A-Head is funding research into new treatment options for people with incurable head and neck cancer at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre in Northwood.
The charity has awarded £8,149 to a study that will assess whether routine use of targeted radiotherapy, together with an upfront palliative care referral, can improve the quality of life for patients and their caregivers.
The study, known as GOAL27-6, is being led by Dr Kevin Chiu, who is a consultant head and neck oncologist and radiotherapy clinical lead with the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust.
Get A-Head chairman Tom Bromwich said: “Dr Chiu and his team have anecdotal evidence that their radiotherapy approach can reduce unpleasant symptoms – this study will give them a more evidence-based picture of the treatment’s success.
“I’m delighted that Get A-Head is able to support this work. Improving quality of life for patients is one of our key aims.”
