BUCKS BEACONS: Scout unit holds first Amersham fundraiser ahead of World Scout Jamboree in Korea

A Bucks Beacons scouts group hosted a Round the World fundraiser in Amersham on Saturday, July 30.

An Explorer Scout unit of 36 Young People and four Leaders, made up of scouts from all over Buckinghamshire, held their first fundraising event in preparation for the 25th World Scout Jamboree (WSJ) which will take place in South Korea next summer.

The WSJ is a World Organization of the Scout Movement event that comes around every four years.

Phill Rycraft, 1st Wendover Apollo Scouts Leader, said: “The WSJ is an opportunity for 40,000 Scouts from all over the world to have their voices heard on topics such as sustainability, racial and sexual equality and most importantly, the topics that matter to them.”

Scouts hoping to make it to Korea next year must raise around £3,670, with fundraisers that positively contribute to their community encouraged.

The Round the World Fundraiser, held at Rectory Hill in Amersham, had a number of country-themed stalls, such as ‘Leaning tower of Jenga’ that represented Italy.

There were also ‘Tastes of the world’ stalls which offered the chance to eat some traditional Korean Kimchi and even some exotic, spicy crickets.

Phill said: “We had a Car Wash, BBQ and Bar that was very popular throughout the day and we thank all those that stopped to have their car cleaned and enjoy a delicious burger.  Tesco Amersham and BJ from their community team have been very supportive of the unit, allowing bag packing activity in store and providing items for the tombola at the fundraiser.”

“All in all we took a little under £1400 on the day with some generous donations from the public. This will be spent on equipping the Young People with some branded tops with our unit logo on so they can be recognised when they are out in their local community on their other fundraising activities.”
