St Albans City and District Council’s Civic Centre hosted the annual Mayor’s Pride Awards on March 5, where the ten winners were celebrated for their community work.
Hundreds of guests enjoyed treats from the Pudding Stop and music from folk duo Elizabeth and Jameson before sitting down for the awards ceremony.
Mayor of St Albans, councillor Anthony Rowlands personally awarded Skyswood Primary and Nursery School and the Orchard Nursing Home The Mayor’s Intergenerational Award, and local faith leaders Rabbi Adam Zagoria-Moffet and Akhtar Zaman DL The Mayor’s Special Award.
The other awards were nominated by the public from 200 contenders. Community Champion of the Year was awarded to Lynn Dutton and Sharon Linney, the Cultural Innovation Award was given to Doodlebugs and the Young Person of Distinction was awarded to 16-year-old Ben Jones.
Community Project of the Year went to the St Albans Community Pantry Festive Project, Community-Oriented Business of the Year went to Mix 92.6, Environmental Champion of the Year went to No Floor No More and the Inclusive Communities Award went to the Albans Community Pantry.
Vic and Vera Foster were given the Volunteer Award for managing and driving a minibus that takes elderly people to and from a lunch club at St Stephen’s Church.
Mayor Rowlands said: “These awards celebrate people, young and old alike, who make a priceless contribution to our community.
“The range of good work that has been undertaken by these individuals is quite staggering, from projects designed to stop food waste and help those going hungry to initiatives to improve access for the disabled.”
