Nine fire engines were dispatched to flats in Garston after a balcony barbecue set on fire.
At 9.14pm on Wednesday, May 29, Hertfordshire Fire Control received reports of a fire on the 11th floor of the Abbey View block of flats in Garsmouth Way. Nine fire engines were dispatched to the scene, as well as an aerial lift platform and a control unit.
Crews arrived at the scene within four minutes of being dispatched and began investigating the scene. The source of the report was found to be a barbecue on a balcony of a flat on the 11th floor.
Once the barbecue had been located, the fire was extinguished and advice was given to the people at the property.
Taking to social media, residents said that the incident brought back the “trauma” of the 2022 fire at Abbey View and branded the act “irresponsible” and an “appalling pull on resources”.
Mark Barber, Assistant Chief Fire Officer, said: “As we welcome warmer weather, we would advise people not to use barbecues on their balcony. Embers can easily carry and set fire to your or your neighbour’s balcony and possessions, with severe consequences.”
