Watford’s only British-style brass band is celebrating more than 125 years of running, as well as sharing its fears following the pandemic and the current cost-of-living crisis.
The Watford Band has been established for more than 125 years and regularly performs popular concerts across Hertfordshire, including at the bandstand in Cassiobury Park.
In January 2023, they set up their development band, Brass Beats, to provide a place for beginner players of all ages to meet and learn to play as part of an ensemble.
Since the pandemic, The Watford Band’s running costs have increased dramatically, and they are now at the point where these costs exceed their income.
The band recently gained promotion to the 3rd Section and has qualified for the National Finals in Cheltenham later this month. While this is a huge achievement, they are concerned about the extra financial costs.
The Watford Band’s chairperson Jordan Low told WATFORDnews: “It’s a real privilege to play as part of the band and to be able to share our love of music with the community, but without any additional fundraising, it’s a concern we might not be able to continue the tradition into the future.”
