WHAT A RACKET! Gerrards Cross residents fear new sports facility plans threaten area’s ‘tranquillity’

Gerrards Cross residents fear for the “tranquillity” of their “peaceful” community amid plans for a new padel tennis court.

On Thursday, May 23, Gerrards Cross Community Association (GXCA) submitted plans to turn little-used tennis courts and an allotment space on East Common into courts for padel, a hybrid sport of tennis and squash.

The allotment holders were dismayed to be served an eviction notice soon after.

A number of people and groups objected to the plans, including the residents of Marsham Lodge, St Michael’s Convent, Gerrards Cross Town Council, the Royal Legion, two MPs, and The Lutyens Society.

Following fierce opposition, the plans and eviction notice were withdrawn in July. However, many residents fear that the proposals will be resubmitted.

Sarah Williams is an allotment holder and a member of GXCA who lives in the immediate area surrounding the proposed development.

She told CHALFONTS&GERRARDSCROSSnews: “We feel strongly that this is the right project, wrong place. The proposed court is on green belt and in a quiet conservation area. Research suggests sound levels [from padel] reach between 71 and 91 decibels; 91 decibels are the equivalent of a pneumatic drill.

“This is an area with an older demographic. We live here because it is tranquil, which will not be the case with the shotgun fire of padel seven days a week.”

GXCA has been contacted for comment.
