WE’RE CLOSED: Dumped soil at driving range forces closure

Published on: 4th November 2026   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category: Featured

A driving range has been forced to close after “hundreds of tonnes” of dumped soil was uncovered on the grounds.

Hertsmere Borough Council (HBC) claimed it first heard of the “large volume of soil” located at Bushey Driving Range on October 9.

The purpose of the soil is currently unknown as the council-owned land is not currently being dug up.

An HBC spokesperson said: “Council officers made inspections and enquiries of the site during the week commencing October 12 to try and establish the nature and scale of the waste, and make enquiries of the tenant, and notified the Environment Agency of their findings.

“The Environment Agency have advised the council that they will undertake a formal investigation into the matter, and because of this the driving range will be closed to the general public as a precautionary measure with effect from Friday, October 16 pending the outcome of the investigation.”

Bushey Park councillor Maxie Allen added that “hundreds of tonnes” of soil and mud could be seen piled around the edge of the driving range.

HBC is developing plans for 250 homes, as well as more infrastructure at the former Bushey Golf and Country Club site, with around 60% of the land becoming public open space.

Bushey Driving Range – currently listed as ‘temporarily closed’ on Google – has been contacted for comment.
