A 22-year-old from Radlett won a national boxing championship for the second time last month, after previously winning in 2020.

Ben Hyams took to the ring on Sunday, January 29 and won all three of his fights, walking away with a gold medal for the welterweight division.

University teams went head-to-head at the national competition run by the British Universities and College Sport (BUCS).

Ben is an International Business student at Loughborough University and is captain of the boxing team. He also belongs to Brookside Boxing Club in Borehamwood.

He said: “I was over the moon with the win; it was a really exciting weekend. It was a really intense competition to take part in and it was great to represent my university and club.

“My progress has been an interesting journey as I was out last season with a back injury, and this was my first competition since then. I was really excited to get back in and I’ve been progressing really well. My uni and club coaches have helped me massively.”

Ben’s dad said: “We’re very proud of him and all of his achievements; it takes a lot to go into a ring.”

Ben’s next competition will be on March 18 and he’s “looking forward to getting out again as soon as possible.”
