Artwork created by a sculptor who grew up in Reveley Lodge in Bushey is coming home.
Reveley Lodge was home to the Chewett family, who had numerous connections to Slade School of Fine Art and the Herkomer School.
Jocelyn Chewett, who was born in Canada in 1906, also lived at Reveley Lodge. She moved into the Grade II listed Victorian building with her husband, renowned artist Stephen Gilbert.
Stephen was a painter and sculptor recognised as one of the few British artists to fully embrace the avant-garde movement in Paris in the 1950s.
His grandfather Albert, known for being a favourite of Queen Victoria, created the statue of Eros that still stands in Piccadilly Circus.
Two sculptures made by Jocelyn and Stephen in 1966 were exhibited together at the Musée Rodin in Paris.
Recently restored, the works of art are now ready to be shown to the public once more.
With the commitment of the artists’ estates and curators Anthony Waites, Julian Hutton and trustee Granville Taylor, Reveley Lodge is now hoping to display the sculptures.
A more comprehensive indoor exhibition of their work is also set to take place.
Speaking to BUSHEYnews, curator Anthony shared: “Jocelyn Chewett has been neglected to date, purely owing to the fact that she was a female artist. We intend to address this.
“With the current interest in Stephen Gilbert and the Cobra group of artists, along with a resurgence of female abstract artists, we propose with these exhibitions to give the public a more in-depth understanding of these two important artists.”
The Reveley Lodge team is also appealing for people who might be interested in forming a committee to share ideas about future exhibitions.
