A funeral home in Watford has a darned good idea to raise funds for Remembrance Day Knitted poppies are available from The Co-operative Funeralcare in Kingswood to raise funds for the Royal British Legion (RBL) Poppy Appeal. The funeral homes provided the wool and knitting pattern and, thanks to the stitching power of local volunteers, scores of knitted poppies have been produced in time for Remembrance Day. The Kingswood Baptist Church, Kingswood Residents, plus St Peter’s Church on Bushey Mill Lane, Stanbury Avenue Craft Club, Beechen Grove Women’s Institute and the ladies of St. Margaret’s Church ‘create and chat’ club in Bowers Gifford, all got the ball of wool rolling by donating over 500 knitted poppies to The Co-operative Funeralcare. The funeral home will hold a special coffee morning at the Kingswood Baptist Church Hall on Wednesday 19th November from 11am to 1pm to say a big thank you to everybody for their hard work in knitting and crocheting the poppies. The Mayor of Watford will be present and there will also be a Speed Cake Decorating Competition during the morning and the final amount which has been raised will be announced. Charmian Alexander, Manager at The Co-operative Funeralcare, said: “Every year we support the RBL by providing traditional poppies, but we thought knitted poppies would be a bit different and perhaps more attractive and durable. One or two of our funeral homes provided knitted poppies last year and they were really successful, so we thought we would roll it out across our area. It has really brought the community together and we would like to thank all the knitters for their support. “We are encouraging local people to purchase the knitted poppies which have been made locally in aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.”
