WATER WORKS: Town remains ‘open for business’ while sewage reconstruction begins in Chalfont St Peter

Published on: 17th October 2024   |   By: Ellie Rose   |   Category: Uncategorized

The Chalfont St Peter High Street will be closed for up to six weeks as Thames Water carries out work to “eliminate sewage flooding”.

During the winter of 2023, persistent and heavy downpours caused many disruptions for the village.

The area received more than 200% of the long-term average rainfall, with February reported as the wettest since records began in 1836.

Over the last year, Chalfont St Peter Parish Council has been liaising with other organisations, including Thames Water, Buckingham Council – Lead Local Flood Authority and the Environment Agency, to help minimize future disruption caused by flooding.

In an update shared by the parish council, it was revealed that Buckinghamshire Council had cleared the debris and growth within the first section of the culvert.

Buckinghamshire Council are also undertaking drainage surveys to the village centre drains and will be undertaking remediation works if required.

To help tackle the issue, Thames Water will be creating two new sewer access points and underground pipelines which will help to take excess flow from the high street.

While the work is carried out, the parish council has shared that the “shops [are] open for business as normal” despite a small section of the High Street closing.

All car parks will remain open, with one hour free parking available.

The council are also encouraging residents to “#ShopLocal to support our village community in the run up to Christmas”.

One lane of the northbound carriageway of the A413 will be closed while works are underway, but access from the Greyhound roundabout will remain open.

The village will also be accessible from Lower Road and Market Place.

The closure is set to be in place until Thursday, December 5, with work being carried out Monday to Saturday from 7am to 6pm.

Other worked planned by Thames Water to help minimize future flooding includes installing long-term flow monitors, sealing manholes and lining sewers.

More information about the new tankering point can be found on thameswater.co.uk/misbournevalley.
