A popstar who lived in Chalfont St Giles has died aged 31.
Liam Payne, who rose to fame with his band One Direction, fell from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, police say.
In a statement, police shared that they discovered Payne’s body after an emergency crew was called to respond to a report of a “an aggressive man who may have been under the effects of drugs and alcohol”.
Arriving at the hotel, officers were told a loud sound had been heard in the interior courtyard and soon after discovered a body.
A police investigation has been launched and an autopsy is being conducted.
Only hours before, Payne posted on Snapchat saying: “It’s a lovely day here in Argentina”.
Liam started is career after auditioning on The X Factor, where judges put together the band One Direction, along with bandmates Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik.
The popstar became hugely successful as part of the group before embarking on a solo career after the band went on a hiatus in 2016.
He released one album, two EPs, 14 singles and nine music videos. Some of his popular songs include Strip that Down, Familiar and First Time.
Liam had previously been outspoken about struggling with alcoholism.
On The Diary of a CEO podcast in 2021 he shared: “I was worried how far my rock bottom was going to be. There is some stuff that I have definitely never, ever spoken about. It was really, really, really severe.”
“And it was a problem. And it was only when I saw myself after that, I was like ‘Right, I need to fix myself'”.
Celebrities have been taking to social media to share their condolences and grief.
Charlie Puth, who worked with Payne on his 2017 single Bedroom Floor, said in his Instagram Story: “Liam was always so kind to me. He was one of the first major artists I got to work with. I can not believe he is gone.”
Paris Hilton shared on X: “So upsetting to hear the news of [his] passing. Sending love and condolences to his family and loved ones. RIP my friend”.
