A man has been arrested on suspicion of offences relating to material distributed across the Harpenden and Berkhamsted constituency ahead of the General Election.
A 72-year-old man was arrested on the morning of Tuesday, June 25, on suspicion of criminal damage and offences under the Public Order and Representation of the People Acts. He has since been bailed pending further enquiries.
Hertfordshire Police confirmed that the arrest related to a number of materials displayed at a variety of locations across Berkhamsted and Harpenden in the run-up to the election on Thursday, July 4.
It is believed that the items contained material falsely accusing Conservative candidate Nigel Gardner of being a lobbyist for Vladimir Putin’s Russia.
Mr Gardner has clarified previously that the public affairs agency he founded, GPlus, did operate media relations in the UK for the Russian government for a time. Nigel left the agency in 2009 and now has what he calls “hawkish” attitudes on Russia.
It is believed that the arrested individual acted alone in the matter. It has also been confirmed that he is not linked to any of the other parties involved in election campaigns.
On the date of the election, Thursday, July 4, Liberal Democrat candidate Victoria Collins was elected as the new members of parliament.
