Plans have been approved to convert a 16th century pub in Rickmansworth into a Thai massage business.
The Tree on Uxbridge Road has stood vacant since January 2019, when the pub closed its doors. Since then, there have reportedly been no offers to continue using the site as a public house or other community building.
In May 2023, a campaign was launched in an effort to save the pub, which had fallen into disrepair. Though works were completed to improve the appearance of The Tree, it remained empty.
The plans will see the inside of the Grade II listed building adapted to include treatment rooms, a reception area, and supporting retail facilities. Original features, such as timber beams, will be retained and incorporated into the new layout.
The planning statement says that the public benefits of the scheme include “securing the building’s long-term preservation, enhancing its condition, and providing a sustainable and viable use that contributes to the local economy”.
Three Rivers District Council approved the plans on Friday, May 23.
