A rising tide of antisemitism and threats to community cohesion are sadly becoming a reality for people in Bushey, and on Thursday, November 27, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer visited to listen to concerns.
Leader of Hertsmere Borough Council councillor Jeremy Newmark welcomed Sir Keir to Bushey United Synagogue so he could hear directly from schoolchildren, students and families, who shared their experiences and the challenges they are facing.
Sir Keir also met privately with cllr Newmark to reflect on what he had heard and discuss the work the council has embarked on to support and strengthen community relations.
One of the speakers at the community forum was Year 10 student Josh from JCoSS, who proudly presented his personal story of experiencing antisemitic bullying at a previous school.
Cllr Newmark said: “The Prime Minister was visibly and profoundly affected by the testimonies he heard and was very encouraging about the work we are doing here in Hertsmere to support our communities and strengthen cohesion across the borough.”
